Activity Type Categories

Solid Waste (SW) Landfills/Disposal Facilities
Solid waste was disposed and remains at these sites, or is expected to be disposed in the future, including:

Solid Waste (SW) Storage/Treatment/Processing Facilities
Solid waste is managed, but not disposed, at these sites. As the name implies, solid waste storage facilities merely store solid waste prior to treatment/processing or disposal. Solid waste treatment/processing facilities are operations that physically or chemically alter solid waste, generally to facilitate transport, further processing, utilization, or disposal, but processing of certain source separate materials for recycling may be exempt from regulation and not included in the SHWIMS database.

Solid Waste (SW) Exempt Treatment Facilities
These are operations that physically or chemically alter solid waste, generally to facilitate beneficial use, and that are required to obtain a written exemption from the Department.

Solid Waste (SW)/Recyclables Transporters
These are services licensed to transport solid waste in Wisconsin including, but not limited to, the following solid wastes: municipal solid waste, construction and demolition debris, asbestos, and recyclables. This category does not include hazardous waste transporters, infectious waste transporters or services for transport of certain other waste exempt from solid waste rules, such as municipal wastewater treatment sludge, water supply treatment sludge, dredge materials, and fruit and vegetable processing waste.

Solid Waste (SW) Transfer Facilities
Solid waste is collected at these sites, generally for transport in larger loads and further distance. Waste may be stored up to 24 hours.

Waste Oil Activities
Used engine oil, lubricants, hydraulic fluids, and certain insulating and cooling fluids are managed by these operations, and they are required to provide one time notification or annual reporting to the Department. This Category includes: used oil transport and transfer, used oil processing and refining, burning of off-specification used oil for energy recover, and used oil fuel marketing.

Infectious Waste Generators
Facilities who generate infectious/medical waste including hospitals, clinics, nursing homes, dental clinics, veterinary clinics, clinical laboratories, dialysis clinics and others (such as universities, prisons, public health departments). The infectious waste generators tracked in the SHWIMS database are currently required to submit an infectious waste annual report or have submitted one in the past.

Infectious Waste Sharps Collection Stations
Facilities which accept sharps from the public (that is, anyone who generates less than 50 lb/mo, which can include farmers, institutions and businesses). Those who don't generate sharps of their own, such as pharmacies, must register with DNR and should be on the list. Those who do generate sharps of their own may register and may be on the list, but many are not.

Infectious Waste Treatment Facilities
These are solid waste processing facilities that are approved to treat infectious waste. Infectious Waste Storage Facilities are included with storage facilities for other wastes. See "SW Storage/Treatment/Processing Facilities".

Infectious Waste Transporters
These are services licensed to transport infectious/medical waste in Wisconsin. This includes both commercial transporters and medical facilities that transport more than 50 pounds of their own waste per month.

Hazardous Waste (HW) Generator Activities
A generator is a person, business, or property whose actions or processes produce a hazardous waste (as identified in ch. NR 600), or whose action first cause a hazardous waste to become subject to regulation. Specific regulations apply depending on whether the generator is a large, small or very small quantity generator.

Hazardous Waste (HW) Treatment/Storage/Disposal Facilities
Hazardous Waste Treatment/Storage/Disposal Facilities (TSDs) are regulated under ch. NR 600.

Hazardous Waste (HW) Exempt Treatment Activities
Certain activities that occur using hazardous waste are exempt from hazardous waste regulation if done according to specifications/requirements in ch. NR 600. These activities include but are not limited to recycling, recovery/reclamation, beneficial use or reuse, on-site wastewater treatment; publicly owned treatment works (POTWs), use as a Hazardous waste fuel or fuel oil activities, etc.

Hazardous Waste (HW) Transporters
These are services licensed to transport hazardous waste in Wisconsin.

Hazardous Waste (HW) Transfer Facilities
A transportation related facility where shipments of hazardous waste are held in the normal course of transportation. Examples include loading docks, parking areas, and storage areas.

Solid/Hazardous Waste Miscellaneous Facilities
Activities or facilities/entities which are not covered under other categories. Examples of these activities include, but are not limited to, building on abandoned landfills, asphalt plants, mobile soil remediation units, out-of-state TSDs, universal waste handlers, mines, well fields, solid waste management units, hazardous waste corrective action units, etc...

Waste Registry
Historic fill sites are sites where solid or hazardous wastes were disposed
