Year-round fishing waters

Fishing Wisconsin

Hook and line fishing is open all year in these waters for all fish species except muskellunge, lake sturgeon, trout, paddlefish and threatened or endangered fish, and as otherwise noted in the Special County Regulations for the waterbody where you plan to fish.

Special county regulations

Be sure to familiarize yourself with the Special County Regulations for the county and waterbody you plan to fish. For many of these year-round fishing opportunities, there are some specific rules on species, sizes, and bag limits.

Experimental waters of the Northern Highlands Fishery Research Area:

Escanaba, Mystery, Nebish, Pallette, and Spruce Lakes have been managed as experimental waters since 1946. Every fish taken is counted and measured as part of the world's longest continuous record of angler harvest! A free daily fishing permit from the Escanaba Lake Research Station is required to fish on any of these five lakes. The research station is located three and one-half miles east of Trout Lake off of Highway M in Vilas County. A Wisconsin fishing license is also required.

The lakes are open to continuous year-round fishing for all species unless specified. The research station is open from 4 a.m. to 8-10 p.m. during the open water season and 4 a.m. to 6-8 p.m. during the ice fishing season. Closing hours vary depending on available daylight. After fishing, anglers must return the permit and bring their catch to be examined by biologists for entry into the database. For more information, contact: the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, Northern Highland Fishery Research Area, 3110 Trout Lake Station Drive, Boulder Junction, Wisconsin  54512, (715) 614-4730.

  • Escanaba Lake - Three walleye from 15" but less than 20" may be kept and only one fish may be over 24" until department notification that the annual quota has been reached, and thereafter only catch-and-release fishing for walleye is allowed.  Lead tackle (specifically jigs and split shots) greater than one inch in any dimension and less than one ounce is prohibited.
  • Nebish Lake - There is no minimum length limit on smallmouth bass, but smallmouth bass 9" through 12" may not be kept.  Live fish (minnows) bait is prohibited.  Lead tackle (specifically jigs and split shots) greater than one inch in any dimension and less than one ounce is prohibited.
  • Palette Lake - The minimum length limit on smallmouth bass is 22" and the daily bag limit is 1.  Lake trout fish is prohibited.  Lead tackle (specifically jigs and split shots) greater than one inch in any dimension and less than one ounce is prohibited.
